I just saw this episode of South Park for the first time last night, the one that caused a bit of commotion over it being a possible conclusion to the series. It and the following episode struck a few nerves with me. More than a few actually… (click the title to watch it in full or check it out here)

With me getting through the end a five year relationship in January, and coming to terms with the fact that all the people and things I loved are… well, different to say the least. A lot of life’s subtle joys seem to have lost their flavor, and I’m feeling a bit cynical.

It’s been a struggle for me. Things will turn around, I mean they always have. Any low I’ve gone through has come through to an even better high… but…

I’m getting older.. and the life I wanted started when I was twenty. That’s the last time I knew who I was -especially as a bachelor. I guess I’m just wishing things were simpler, richer, and more fulfilling and new like they were at that time in my life. Will the next relationship I start be with someone just as cynical, just as broken? ~~Will we find each other and know each other better because of that, or settle with what is ultimately a less fulfilling relationship.~~ That’s what I want to avoid.

Every day seems to mend some of my feelings of the past. I guess what it comes down to is I kind of feel bad. I wish I could experience the things I currently love, a new. I asked myself if things always going to be a repeat from here on out? I guess I’m just going to have to explore a lot more of the unknown and find out.

YouTube aficionado and Interwebs friend Aaron Yonda, someone you may be familiar with as co-creator of Chad Vader, was recently completely banned from Facebook for actions unaffiliated to him; You can hear the full story in the video but what really shook me, and made me think… were the repercussions felt not only from being disconnected from your social network, but being disconnected from every site or service you’ve ever clicked “Sign up with Facebook” or “Sign on with Facebook”. The thought of this really frightened me.

We see Facebook as convenient, but the fact is we live in it’s ecosystem. What happens when that ecosystem fails? Or worse, shuts you out. What happens if the Facebook becomes Myspace. How would we even attempt to migrate? When do we stop calling it the Internet and start calling it the Embeddednet.

I’ve been a huge proponent of social media and Facebook. It’s clearly made the Internet a more active environment for all of us, and I feel enriched everyday I’m entrenched in it’s content. I’ve made peace with the privacy concerns and made a very conscious decision to live publicly. I feel my information is a worthy barter for the service I’m provided. Recently however, is the first time I’ve been stopped to rethink my position.

I still stand on those ideals, but I now fear a fully embedded-net that can fail or out you without a contingency. Just wanted to put my thoughts out there.
